عمر بن الخطّاب
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb
The second Caliph · al-Fārūq, who distinguished truth from falsehood
Once among the fiercest opponents of Islam, ʿUmar (ra) set out to harm the Prophet ﷺ but was transformed on hearing the Qur'an; his conversion gave the early Muslims courage to pray openly. The Prophet ﷺ named him al-Fārūq, the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood.
As the second Caliph he expanded and organised a just state: he established the Islamic calendar, instituted public welfare and accountability, and was renowned for a justice so scrupulous that he feared being questioned over a stray animal on the road. He combined awe-inspiring strength with deep humility before Allah.
