عثمان بن عفّان
ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān
The third Caliph · Dhū al-Nūrayn · of great modesty and generosity
An early believer of noble lineage and immense wealth, ʿUthmān (ra) was famed for a modesty that the angels themselves respected and for boundless generosity, equipping the army of hardship and buying the well of Rūmah to give the Muslims water freely. He married two daughters of the Prophet ﷺ in turn, earning the title Dhū al-Nūrayn, possessor of two lights.
As the third Caliph he oversaw the gathering of the Qur'an into a single authoritative written codex, copies of which were sent across the lands, preserving the recitation for all generations. His later years were marked by trial, which he met with patience.
