A year after Badr, Quraysh returned for revenge. The Muslims held the advantage until a group of archers, seeing victory near, abandoned the position they had been ordered to hold.
The army was caught from behind and suffered grievous losses, including the Prophet's uncle Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib; the Prophet ﷺ himself was wounded.
