The Battle of Ḥunayn
غزوة حنينShortly after Makkah, a large Muslim army was ambushed in the valley of Ḥunayn and at first scattered, but the Prophet ﷺ stood firm and rallied the believers to a decisive victory, a lesson that numbers alone avail nothing.
Opposing force
≈ 4,000 (Hawāzin and Thaqīf)
۞
The Valley Ambush

The believers
≈ 12,000
Victory after an early reverse
How it unfolded
- 1
Concealed archers rained arrows as the army entered the valley, and many ranks broke and fled.
- 2
The Prophet ﷺ stood firm on his mule, calling, 'I am the Prophet, this is no lie; I am the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.'
- 3
Al-ʿAbbās (ra) called the companions back, and they rallied around him.
- 4
Allah sent down tranquillity, and the believers turned the rout into victory.
Reflections
- Large numbers are no substitute for sincerity and reliance on Allah.
- Steadfast leadership turns the tide.
