The Prophet (ﷺ), when he performed the Fajr prayer, would remain seated in his prayer place until the sun rose brightly
Authenticعَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ رَضيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا صَلَّى الفَجْرَ جَلَسَ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ حَسَنًا، وَقَالَ: كَانَ لَا يَقُومُ مِنْ مُصَلَّاهُ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي فِيهِ الصُّبْحَ أَوِ الغَدَاةَ، حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ، فَإِذَا طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ قَامَ، وَكَانُوا يَتَحَدَّثُونَ فَيَأْخُذُونَ فِي أَمْرِ الجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَيَضْحَكُونَ وَيَتَبَسَّمُ.
Jābir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ), when he performed the Fajr prayer, would remain seated in his prayer place until the sun rose brightly. He said: He would not leave the spot where he prayed Fajr or the Morning prayer until the sun had risen. When the sun rose, he would stand up. During that time, the people would talk about matters from the pre-Islamic days of ignorance; they would laugh and he would smile.
Explanation
It was from the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) that when he performed the Fajr prayer, he would remain seated in his prayer place until the sun rose high. He would not leave his place of prayer where he had performed Fajr until the sun had risen. When the sun had risen, he would stand up, and they would begin talking, mentioning some matters from their pre-Islamic days while he remained silent. They would laugh, and he would sometimes smile with them.

- It is recommended to engage in remembrance of Allah after the Fajr prayer until the sun rises and to remain in one's place of prayer unless there is a valid excuse.
- This shows the noble character and gentle nature of the Prophet (ﷺ), as he would sit with his Companions, listen to their conversations and stories, and smile at what they shared.
- The permissibility of talking and mentioning events from the pre-Islamic days (Jāhiliyyah) in the mosque.
- The permissibility of laughing and smiling, as what is forbidden is excessive laughter.
